Some of my favourite books and online resources to help you with your adopted greyhound.

Knowledge is power.

  • Retired racing greyhounds for dummies book cover

    Retired Racing Greyhounds for Dummies

I bought this book before I adopted Miss Nancy and it was my bible after I got her! Learning as much as you can before you adopt your greyhound so that you know what to expect, and to make sure it’s the right thing for you, is a great idea. This book is written by an American so some bits will not be relevant to the UK but I still found it very informative and helpful to learn about the breed and have something to refer to.

  • The other end of the leash book cover

The Other End of the Leash

I found this book so valuable in increasing my understanding of dogs and seeing things from their perspective. Patricia McConnell discusses why humans behave the way we do around our dogs, how dogs might interpret our behavior, and how to interact with our dogs in ways that bring out the best in our four-legged friends. The Other End of the Leash demonstrates how even the slightest changes in your voice and the way you stand can help your dog understand what you want.

  • The house lurcher book cover

The House Lurcher: Care, Rearing and Training at Home

By Jackie Drakeford, this book is a rich source of sighthound information from a different perspective. It covers training for happy coexistence in the house, recall, feeding and holistic medical care amongst much else. It focusses on lurchers (sighthounds mixes), but the information will be relevant to anyone with a pure breed greyhound, lurcher, whippet or Galgo too.

  • Understanding Greyhounds book cover

Understanding Greyhounds; Our Companions Through the Ages

This book was recommended to me by some own whose beautiful greyhound I looked after. Written by Mary Fox, who had a greyhound sanctuary in Ireland, it has such a lot of interesting history about greyhounds from historical manuscripts, including one of the best descriptions of a greyhound I’ve ever read! Combined with her own experiences with greyhounds at the sanctuary it is full of interesting tips and knowledge.
