Who we are

I’m Tori, founder (with Miss Nancy by my side) of Miss Nancy’s Day Off. I have a background in art and design with a degree in shoe making, and have worked at various times as a shoe designer, barmaid, gardener, picture framer, administrator, and interior decorator. I launched my jewellery business Victoria Grace Silversmith around seven years ago.

Throughout these years and various jobs one thing that stayed true was my love of animals. I’ve been vegan for the past eight years and am very passionate about trying to cause as little suffering as possible to other animals of all species while I am on this planet. The easiest way to start living that was to stop eating animals. Every time look at my cherished Miss Nancy I remember that in many countries people eat dogs including greyhounds, that our choice of what animals are ok to eat is entirely subjective.

We have a focus on raising awareness for greyhounds and galgos as their situation is so desperate, and trying to promote animal rescue and adopting a dog if you want one in your life! They really are the most fantastic companions. I also want to promote compassion and equality for all species of animals, be they wild, or bred by humans for our own purposes like Miss Nancy, Gala, and farm animals.

Miss Nancy

I adopted Miss Nancy in 2020. She was a 2.5 year old ex-racing greyhound from Ireland, who had been racing in the UK. I adopted her from a rescue kennels where she had been for two weeks since leaving her trainer. When I brought her home, my life changed more than I would have thought possible.

It wasn’t a stress free start - I had car problems on the journey and was worrying we would break down before I could even get her home. I lived in a first floor flat in a small village, and Miss Nancy didn’t know how to climb stairs and had never been in a house before. Helping her up and down the stairs so we could get out on regular toilet trips, getting to know each other, introducing her to alone time was tough on us both.

Everything she saw was totally new to her - other dogs, people playing tennis, hoovers, deer and squirrels, people trying to touch her while we were out. It took us both many months to settle into our new life together, and to form a deep bond of love and friendship.

Sharing the next three and a half years of my life with her was the most amazing experience, full of fun, frustration, cuddles, adventures. I had a deep desire to try and bring this dog, who had been born into slavery on the dog tracks and had not known love or comfort for the first 2.5 years of her life, happiness and contentment with me.

Gala

aka Lady Galadriel

I adopted Gala in August 2025 from a rescue organisation in the UK. She is a five year old Galgo, who spent the first couple of years of her life with a hunter in Spain. Galgos and Podencos are used for hunting in rural communities, and have no protection under Spanish law, as pet animals do. They are treated as tools and disposed of as such. They live harsh lives, and if they are not up to standard or wanted they may be abandoned, left at a Perrera which is a Spanish kill centre, or tortured and killed. Some also get handed in directly to rescue organisations in Spain working to save these dogs.

Gala came directly from a hunter who had twelve dogs he no longer wanted. When they were finally handed to the rescue there was only 9 left. She stayed in Spain in a residencia rescue until she got her chance to come over to the UK to a foster home. She was there for six months before she came home to me.

She found the change really hard after being with her foster family for so long, but gradually is coming round and learning to feel comfortable in her new home. She is very shy of humans and other dogs, and it took several weeks before she would let my family touch her, or start going out for walks. She is a very gentle, kind girl with so much affection for people once she knows them. We are now starting to explore the wider world and go on little adventures of our own as we build our own bond of love and trust, and try to increase Gala’s confidence.
